MY LIFE IN KIBERA

Kibera is the largest slum in Kenya. It is located a bout 5 kilometers from Nairobi City.(Kenyan Capital City). It is over populated, as a result dwellers stay in wooden and metal shades. In Kibera it is normal to find families of upto 8 people stay in a single room, many families only afford one meal during the day,The slum is safe during the day but risky at night especially for foreign visitors,I stayed in Kibera for one month(November 2007) while doing a research on the challenges facing the youth who live in slums.I conducted interviews with 76 youths aged (16-32),facilitated open forum disscussions with the youths in groups of 5-11,participated in various youth activities in the Kibera(Mashimoni Full Gospel Churches of Kenya,Also interviewed 3 women on upbringing a youth in the slums.Sincerely it was a task of challenge but fullfiling,From this study i discoverd that the slum dwellers also dream big just like any other person, what they need is guidance and life skills.Very many organizations indicate they are based in Kibera but sincerely, very few viable projects are on the ground in the slum,in reference to this i founded Evans Wagoro Foundation initially to mobilize like minded youths to support the Kibera slum dwellers, only to realize that EWF impact extended beyond the slums giving birth to the current EWF vision. We believe every person irrespective of where he/she is brought up, can be empowered to live a holistic life,EWF is not mandated by the specifications of the donar community but gets her mandate from the needs of the people,we have established the need, seen the need, got bonded to the need, developed a burden and passion for the need, and commited to meet the need, impacting the youth with positive life skills and facilitating their holistic development,Evans Wagoro Foundation mainly funds her youth initiatives and ensure participation of the youth in her programs but embraces partnership.

Message by Evans Wagoro Chairman and CEO Evans Wagoro Foundation
